Note: A Christian community that arose in 7th-century Syria, claiming its origins in St. Maro, a Syrian hermit of the late 4th and early 5th centuries. It is one of the largest Eastern-rite communities of the Roman Catholic Church, being particularly popular in modern Lebanon, and it is the only Eastern-rite church that has no non-Catholic or Orthodox counterpart. In 680 the Maronites were condemned for their supposed Monothelite beliefs: accepting the heretical doctrine of Sergius, patriarch of Constantinople, who stated that Christ had divine but no human will. The Maronites, however, assert that they have always been orthodox Christians. Communion with the Roman Catholic Church was begun in 1182 and was further solidified in the 16th century with aid from the Jesuit community. After the pope, the spiritual head of the Maronites is the "patriarch of Antioch and all the East," residing in Bkirki, near Beirut. Over the centuries and under various ruling bodies, the Maronites have managed to preserve their freedom, religion, and folk customs. The church retains the ancient West Syrian liturgy, even though Arabic is the vernacular language of the Maronites. Fearful of persecution, Maronites in the 19th century emigrated to southern Europe and North and South America where they can still be found today.

| Dutch ..... Een christelijke gemeenschap die in de 7de eeuw ontstond in Syrië. Men beweerde dat de oorsprong lag bij St. Maro, een Syrische kluizenaar uit de late 4de en vroege 5de eeuw. Het is een van de oudste Oosterse christengemeenschappen van de rooms-katholieke kerk, vooral populair in het moderne Libanon. Het is de enige Oosterse christenkerk die geen niet-katholieke of orthodoxe tegenhanger heeft. In 680 werden de maronieten veroordeeld voor hun vermeende monothelitische geloof: het aanhangen van de ketterse doctrine van Sergius, de patriarch van Constantinopel, die beweerde dat Christus een goddelijke, maar geen menselijke wil had. De maronieten beweren echter dat ze altijd orthodoxe christenen zijn geweest. De toetreding tot de rooms-katholieke kerk begon in 1182 en werd verstevigd in de 16de eeuw met de hulp van de jezuïeten. Na de paus is de geestelijk leider van de maronieten 'de patriarch van Antiochië en het gehele oosten', gezeteld in Bkirki bij Beiroet. | Spanish ..... Una comunidad cristiana que surgió en Siria en el siglo VII, que encuentra sus orígenes en San Maro, un ermitaño sirio de fines del siglo IV y principios del siglo V. Es una de las mayores comunidades de la iglesia Católica Romana del rito oriental, siendo particularmente popular en el Líbano moderno y es la única iglesia del rito oriental que no tiene equivalente no católico u ortodoxo. En el 680 los Maronitas fueron condenados por sus supuestas creencias monoteístas: aceptando la doctrina herética de Sergio aceptando la doctrina herética de Sergio , patriarca de Constantinopla, quien estableció que la voluntad de Cristo era divina no humana. Los Maronitas, sin embargo, afirman que han sido siempre cristianos ortodoxos.
