Extraordinary Days: The Berman Collection of Photographs (lecture)

Date: Sunday, October 29, 2006
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations

The photographs in the exhibition Where We Live: Photographs of America from the Berman Collection (October 24, 2006–February 25, 2007) capture the landscapes, buildings, and lifestyles of contemporary America—ballparks and barbershops, diners and dance halls, farm fields and coal towns.

In this lecture, novelist, essayist, and short-story writer Barry Lopez, whose work traces the relationship between physical landscape and human culture, explores moments in these photographs where the ordinary and the extraordinary meet. Both art and document, the photographs capture the character and feel of life in the United States and use the creative process to help us understand our place in a rapidly changing environment.
