Family Festival

In step with the current exhibition Rembrandt's Late Religious Portraits, our August Family Festival revisits the excitement of Rembrandt's Amsterdam, a cosmopolitan capital whose trading partners ranged from Turkey to the Spice Islands and from New Amsterdam to China.

Music and Dance

The Salaam Ensemble
Arab American and Persian musicians present vocal and instrumental music from the Middle and Near East weaving storytelling, history, and personal narrative into magical sounds and pounding rhythms. The ensemble uses ancient instruments including the oud (lute), ney (cane flute), kemence (bowed spike fiddle), and darabuka (goblet drum).

Return to Sepharad with Adam del Monte and Friends
Renowned flamenco guitarist Adam del Monte and fellow musicians and performers bring Sephardic sounds and the rich tradition of flamenco together. Return to Sepharad explores the relationship between gypsy Flamenco and the music of the Sephardic Jews of Muslim Spain who found refuge in Amsterdam after they were expelled from their homeland.

Pacific Zheng Ensemble
This Monterey Park-based troupe of musicians and dancers performs classical and folk music of China, featuring music and dance from the "Silk Road" era, the Chinese equivalent of the Renaissance period.

Querida
The musicians of Querida use interactive musical storytelling to bring the flavor of Sepharad and the Middle East to life. Like the expelled Sephardic Jews of Spain, these wandering troubadours use music, stories, and whatever they can fit in their suitcases to entertain and delight.

Bali & Beyond Present the Shadow Theater of Bali
Performing artist Maria Bodmann and musicians Cliff DeArment and Jason Stewart take you "behind the screen" of traditional Indonesian shadow theater. See how the plays are performed and enjoy a presentation complete with singing, storytelling, and action.
