Friday Nights at the Getty: David Ornette Cherry (performance)

Date: Friday, September 15, 2006
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

David Ornette Cherry is building a passageway to jazz of the future. Composer, arranger, band leader, and solo musician of amazing artistry, Cherry blends sounds, textures, and rhythms from around the world to continue the musical tradition of his father and teacher, legendary jazz trumpeter Don Cherry.

Cherry creates organic musical fusions on a foundation of garage-style beats, weaving in hypnotic melodica, wood flute, and piano solos, funky instrumental collisions, Latin, North African, and Asian melodies. It all comes together in a sonic collage Cherry calls "multi-kulti" music. Now, with his Ensemble for Improvisors, Cherry is studying site-specific dynamics between sound and silence and nature and technology in his hometown of Los Angeles.

In 2003, Chamber Music America and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers recognized Cherry's sophisticated innovation with their Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.
