Considering Rembrandt (Works-in-Dialogue)

Date: Friday, January 18, 2008
Time: 1:00–3:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Museum Lecture Hall and Museum galleries
Course Fee: $15. Open to 100 participants.

Explore the remarkable early paintings of Rembrandt van Rijn in this afternoon course that combines a lecture with gallery tours and discussion.

Curator Anne Woollett, an expert on Rembrandt and on Dutch and Flemish painting, sets the stage with a lecture on Rembrandt's work, from his meteoric early career through his later trials. Find out how Rembrandt transformed the genres of portraiture and history painting, and learn more about the rich complexity of his painting technique.

Abduction of Europa / Rembrandt

Woollett introduces you to Rembrandt's masterful early works, including dramatic history paintings such as The Abduction of Europa and luminous portraits such as Portrait of a Girl Wearing a Gold-Trimmed Cloak, which is on rare loan and has not been seen publicly for decades. She contrasts these early paintings with his more rugged and searching late masterpieces, such as Saint Bartholomew.

After the lecture, gallery teachers lead small groups of participants into the galleries to look at and discuss the four paintings by Rembrandt on view in the Getty Center galleries.
