Van Gogh's Paint—Was It Special? (Conservation Matters lecture)

Date: Thursday, October 19, 2006
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Vivid color and graphic strokes of thick, opaque paint are hallmarks of the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. Explore Van Gogh's unique style with Leslie Carlyle, head of conservation at Tate in London. She will share the results of recent research into Van Gogh's materials and techniques, which has led to provocative new theories about how he may have manipulated commercially prepared tube paint and used additives to achieve his distinctive look.

About Leslie Carlyle
Dr. Leslie Carlyle specializes in artists' oil painting materials and techniques and is the author of The Artist's Assistant (Archetype Publishers, 2001), a comprehensive analysis of 19th-century artists' materials. As a conservator at the Canadian Conservation Institute from 1980 to 2005, she researched artists' materials and recreated old paint recipes using historically accurate materials. Carlyle has been head of conservation at Tate in London since 2005.

About Conservation Matters
