Haunting, unsettling, and mesmerizing, this visually spare film by director Lars von Trier (Zentropa, Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark) evokes Medea's bloody revenge against her husband Jason, who has abandoned her following his triumphant return from his quest for the Golden Fleece. Made for Danish television, this rarely screened treasure is loosely based on Carl Theodor Dreyer's adaptation of the play Medea by ancient Greek tragedian Euripides. Infused with hypnotic images of sky and sea, this beautiful, brooding, and at times brutal film evokes the depths of human jealousy, ambition, and despair.
