Helen Evans, curator of Byzantine Art at the Metropolitan Museum, discusses how Armenia's artistic tradition helped the nation retain its identity during the Middle Ages, as it became an important center for trade routes uniting East and West. Along the way, Armenian artists adapted different visual forms and transformed them into a unique pictorial language that incorporated influences as widely spread as Persia, Byzantium, and western Europe.
