Published when the Bauhaus's faculty included artists Vassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy, the Meistermappe (masters' portfolio) is not only an outstanding collection of works on paper but an important marker of the moment when printmaking at the influential German art and design school reached its creative and technical zenith.

Produced in 1923 to raise funds for the school while showcasing the creativity and skills of its faculty, this 28th edition of 100 contains eight prints (woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings) by Lyonel Feininger, Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Gerhard Marcks, Moholy-Nagy, Georg Muche, Oskar Schlemmer, and Lothar Schreyer.

The portfolio adds to and enhances the Getty Research Institute's already significant collection of Bauhaus-related prints, letters, teaching and student notes, photographs, typographic samples, and ephemera. Four works from the portfolio, including the three pictured, are featured in the Research Institute's gallery exhibition Bauhaus Beginnings, on view from June 11 through October 13, 2019.
