Structures and Systems: "An Intercontinental Art World"
Saturday October 2, 2004, 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Museum Lecture Hall
The Getty Center

An Intercontinental Art World, part two of Structures and Systems, is held in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's exhibition Beyond Geometry, Experiments in Form 1940s–1970. While Minimalism is largely thought to be a movement exclusive to the United States, other movements incorporating simplified forms and systematic strategies developed simultaneously in North and South America and Europe. Artists on the three continents expanded the dimensions of art both spatially and politically by experimenting with ephemerality, movement, installation, and various collaborative modes of art making. By the 1960s, there was a large body of work that seemed to share basic formal affinities. An Intercontinental Art World brings together an international roster of distinguished scholars, artists, and museum professionals to explore the complex connections linking the vanguard art produced in Europe and the Americas during the 1960s and 1970s.
