Grant Period: July 2011–June 2013

With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the Getty Research Institute is digitizing and making available online more than 61,000 images selected from two unique photographic collections documenting the growth of housing and urban development in Southern California and the Midwest between 1936 and 1997. The first set of 3,200 digitized images is from the Research Library's collections of Leonard Nadel, photographed for the Los Angeles Housing Authority, and is now available. Nearly 58,000 images from Series IV of the Julius Shulman photography archive will be available soon.

Together, the work of these two photographers documents the region's development, as well as the living conditions of both affluent and disadvantaged populations. By juxtaposing their contrasting views, both collections are important records of the shared social history of Los Angeles.

Project Objectives:

• To prepare and digitize approximately 61,000 images from the Julius Shulman photography archive and the Leonard Nadel archive
• To provide access to images through existing Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids, the Library Catalog, the Online Computer Library Center's WorldCat catalog, and the Online Archive of California
• To offer select images for deposit in ARTstor through its Images for Academic Publishing service
