German Sales, 1930–45: Art Works, Art Markets, and Cultural Policy
Grant Period: January 2011–January 2013
German Sales, 1930–45: Art Works, Art Markets, and Cultural Policy is the result of a digital humanities partnership among the Getty Research Institute, the Heidelberg University Library, and the Kunstbibliothek Berlin. This two-year project is part of the Research Institute's larger
Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance (PSCP), which aligns the Institute's collections and the expertise of its staff with the work of scholars interested in the history of collecting, provenance, and display around the world.
The German Sales research project will create a new Getty Provenance Index® searchable database of German art auction catalogs from 1930 to 1945, a period particularly affected by politically sanctioned Nazi looting of art during World War II.
The Research Institute is also collaborating with the Art Library of the State Museums of Berlin to develop a bibliographic database of these catalogs. The project is also supported by the Volkswagen Foundation, which funds the related project at the Art Library of the State Museums of Berlin.
