In this cover illustration to a French cultural journal, which is captioned "A time without pity," the caricature shows the merciless shooting of an innocent schoolboy, slain by an enormous German officer. His boots alone are almost the size of the child, emphasizing the overwhelming tolls of war in everyday life.
