Giuseppe de Fabris commissioned the architect Giovanni Montiroli to prepare a series of original watercolors of the excavations in the area of the Porta Maggiore and Sepulcrum Eurysacis, the so-called Tomb of the Baker, in Rome. Bound in a fine gilt-stamped red morocco presentation volume, the drawings were given to Pope Gregory XVI, patron of the restoration project. The Tomb of the Baker was concealed in the city gate during the early fifth century A.D. and was uncovered during restoration work in 1838. The numerous fragments of sculpture and inscriptions recovered were subsequently reutilized as decorative elements in the surrounding walls.
