Spirit into Matter: The Photographs of Edmund Teske showcases the work of significant but largely unheralded photographer Edmund Teske. Teske lived and worked in Los Angeles from 1943 until his death in 1996. Active in the local avant-garde film, theater, and visual art scenes during the 1950s and 1960s, he played an important role in the cultural life of the city. Teske was also an inventive darkroom technician, and he created images that reveal the power of memory and dreams to transform our perception of the visual world. Spirit into Matter includes many photographs that Teske kept private during his lifetime. They establish Teske as one of the most innovative forces in 20th-century photography.
