All the Mighty World: The Photographs of Roger Fenton, 1852–1860 is the first American survey of the work of one of the most important 19th-century photographers, Roger Fenton (British, 1819–1869), who exerted a profound influence on the medium despite a career that lasted only 10 years. He left behind a widely varied body of work that, with its diversity of subject, poetic content, and highly polished execution, represents one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of photography. The exhibition features about 90 works drawn from the Getty's extensive holdings of Fenton's photographs (some that will only be shown at the Getty) and from other collections.
The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. After the Getty Center, this exhibition will travel to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Tate Britain.
