Pair of Etruscan Disk Earrings

Evidence from grave sites provides the best insight into the art and culture of Etruria in the 7th to 5th centuries B.C. Funerary material, however, reveals more about the patrons than the artisans themselves. Archaeologist Gregory Warden of Southern Methodist University in Dallas shares recent research from excavations at central Italian settlements and sanctuaries that shed new light about ancient artists and how they produced the splendid luxury goods that graced tombs of the Etruscan élites.

About Gregory Warden
Gregory Warden is the University Distinguished Professor of Art History at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. A native of Florence, Italy, Warden is also the founder, principal investigator, and co-director of the Mugello Valley Archaelogical Project, an SMU-sponsored archaeological excavation at the Etruscan site of Poggio Colla located about 20 miles northeast of Florence. Warden has written extensively on Greek, Etruscan, and Roman archaeology and is the executive editor of the scholarly journal Etruscan Studies. In 2009 he coordinated From the Temple and the Tomb: Etruscan Treasures from Tuscany, the largest exhibition on the Etruscans presented in North America.
