Acclaimed opera and theater director Peter Sellars takes inspiration from his new production of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito to consider the concept of clemency and its multilayered history. He examines how it was evoked by the Roman philosopher Seneca in his classic essay De Clementia, written to influence and educate the Emperor Nero, and by Mozart in his final opera, which served as one of the last testaments of the European Enlightenment. Sellars considers Nelson Mandela, who brought the idea and hard-won example of "truth and reconciliation" forward with the highest human stakes, and the current era of Donald Trump, where both "truth" and "reconciliation" are challenged by a deeply divided global community.
