In the 1930s, Hiroshi Hamaya was one of a coterie of photographers who turned their cameras toward the streets of modern Tokyo. A 1939 photo shoot in the snow country of northeastern Japan introduced Hamaya to a different way of life, which profoundly moved the Tokyo native. Jonathan Reynolds, professor of art history at Barnard College, discusses Hamaya's efforts to document both Tokyo's frenetic urban environment and the slower-paced ritual and community life of rural Japan.
