In the early fifth century B.C., Athenian vase painters began decorating large wine vessels with mythological battle scenes of unprecedented grandeur and sophistication. Foremost of these was the so-called "Niobid Painter," whose red-figured portrayals of Greeks fighting amazons, centaurs, and Trojans have been considered reflections of larger paintings by contemporary muralists and generally symbolic of Athenian leadership against Persia. J. Michael Padgett from the Princeton University Art Museum explores these assumptions by examining the oeuvre of the Niobid Painter and his associates, paying special attention to the Gela Krater, a splendid volute krater from the Museo Archeologico in Agrigento, Sicily, on view at the Getty Villa through October.
