Roman scholar Jeremy Hartnett moves beyond the refined realms of palatial villas and the lofty world of statesmen to consider a day in the sandals of the city's poorer residents. Drawing on the evidence of Pompeii and especially its streets, Hartnett explores the ways people scraped together a living, scavenged for something to eat, sought out some excitement, and prayed for a better tomorrow. Among the denizens of this ancient city are a motley crew of gossipy barmaids, loudmouth peddlers, minor officials on the make, and the fancy people who sought to keep them all in their place.

About Jeremy Hartnett
Jeremy Hartnett holds the Anne and Andrew T. Ford Chair in the Liberal Arts at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he is associate professor and chair of Classics. A scholar of Roman city life, he uses archaeological evidence to examine social relations, particularly of the amorphous mass we sometimes term the "non-elite." His book The Roman Street: Urban Life and Society in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Rome (Cambridge, 2017) takes a new look at Roman cities by focusing on their most used, yet least studied, spaces—their thoroughfares, alleyways, and piazzas.
