About the Leadership Institute

Getty Leadership Institute

The Getty Leadership Institute (GLI) is a leading source of continuing professional development for current and future museum leaders. The GLI was created to respond to the growing complexities faced by leaders of museums and other nonprofit institutions. New technologies, shifts in philanthropic patterns, and a vigorously competitive environment challenge institutional leaders to think strategically. Leaders want to make sure they are asking the right questions. Through several key offerings, the GLI provides opportunities for museum professionals, board members, academics, philanthropists, and public officials to come together to question, learn, and plan.

"Leaders don't need to have the right answers—just the right questions.
That's what GLI is about."
Phil Nowlen, Head, Getty Leadership Institute

GLI Programs

The GLI offers a portfolio of professional development programs designed exclusively for museum professionals—including directors, board members, curators, senior executives and staff deeper within the organization—each addressing challenges pertinent to their respective roles.

The Compleat Leader

GLI has begun to develop a strong interactive community of practice for museum professionals online. Our first effort is the Compleat Leader, a compendium of important issues along with related materials, inviting comments. A variety of topics are covered, including leadership and governance; organizational behavior, values and trends.

Other GLI Activities

Other GLI activities include convenings for leaders to pose, question and sometimes reframe issues of significance affecting cultural organizations, collaborations with other organizations serving the museum field, and technical assistance to those initiating leadership programs of their own.

Please revisit this site regularly for more information about the GLI.
