The Museum for African Art
Publication of a series of exhibition catalogues on African art and visual culture
$240,000 awarded in September 2006

The Museum of African Art was awarded a two-year grant in the amount of $240,000 to support a series of publications on African art and visual culture. The Museum is dedicated to increasing the public's understanding and appreciation of African art and culture through internationally acclaimed exhibitions that explore a range of issues pertaining to historical and contemporary African art. The project includes two components: the publication of eight scholarly exhibition catalogues as well as the electronic and physical dissemination of publications to select museums in Africa. The series will cover an impressive breadth of subject matter that promises to bring fresh perspectives to the topics explored, as well as addressing the critical need to provide access to books and electronic media in Africa.

Reaktion Books, London
Books on Asian Art and Architecture
$139,500 awarded April 2002

Reaktion Books, a London-based press active in the fields of art, art history, and cultural studies, received Getty funding for the publication of seven books on Asian art and architecture. Although each book will present a distinct critical style and argument, the series reflects a shared commitment to interdisciplinary analysis, informed by political and social history, architectural theory, anthropology, media studies, and psychoanalysis. Authored by noted art historians, the books will explore topics such as the influence of Ottoman architect Koka Sinan, nationalism in Indian art, and the role of luxury objects in Chinese history and culture. Grant funds are being used to offset production costs, enabling the press to offer the books at lower prices and reach a broader audience.
