Art Center College of Design
For the arrangement and description of the Art Center's institutional archives
$200,000
Art Center College of Design was awarded a two-year grant to catalogue and create electronic finding aids for the institutional archives. As one of the nation's premier schools of design and visual arts for almost 75 years, Art Center' faculty and alumni have led the fields of automotive and product design, advertising, illustration, graphic design, photography, fine arts and film. The Center has thus amassed extensive archival holdings, from slides and publications to correspondence and architectural plans, documenting the history of the institution, of design education and of the Southern California art world. The cataloguing project makes these valuable materials widely available to scholars for the first time.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art/Museum Associates
For the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's institutional archives.
$122,000
Founded in 1910 as the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art, LACMA is the oldest and largest art museum in Los Angeles and has played a fundamental role in the development of 20th century art on the West Coast. LACMA's vast archival collections are of particular significance to the history of art in Los Angeles since 1940. Among the varied materials are a 1967 interview with Man Ray, a video of David Hockney driving a customized car through the museum grounds, and key curatorial files such as those from the highly influential 1971 Art and Technology exhibition. Despite their value, the archives remain largely inaccessible to scholars or the public. As part of the On the Record initiative, a Getty grant is allowing LACMA to research the history of the institution, inventory their archives, and plan for the creation of an institutional archive.
