Exhibition Research and Planning Grants

Support is available to museums in Southern California for the collaborative research and planning of scholarly exhibitions related to the history of postwar art in the Los Angeles area, as part of a city-wide series of exhibitions scheduled to open between September 2011 and June 2012.

Background
On the Record: Art in L.A. 1945-1980 is a special initiative undertaken by the Getty Foundation and the Getty Research Institute to document and preserve the history of postwar art in Southern California. The initiative began with Foundation support for surveys fo archival holdings at 22 local museums, universities, and libraries, as well as those of key dealers, critics, and other individuals. Subsequent surveys focused on Latino and African American art in Southern California. Building on the results of the surveys, the Foundation provided On the Record Archival Grants to enable local institutions to arrange and describe their archivals collections related to the On the Record initiative and to make them accessible to scholars, staff, and the general public. On the Record Exhibition Research and Planning Grants represent the next phase of the initiative, which will result in city-wide series of exhibitions.

For its part, the Getty Research Institute is conducting an extensive cycle of oral histories to document the experiences of key figures from of the postwar art scene and presenting a series of public programs related to On the Record. The Research Institute's Special Collections have also been active in acquiring related collections, such as the archive of architectural photographer Julius Schulman, the Long Beach Museum of Art Video Archive, and the archive of the magazine High Performance magazine.
