These grants support the preparation and publication of scholarly databases, reference works, innovative electronic resources, and other research tools that provide critical resource materials for art-historical scholarship. Priority is given to projects of international importance for which resources are otherwise limited.
Eligibility
Nonprofit institutions are eligible to apply. Grants are intended to support a crucial phase or portion of a larger project, not to provide long-term, ongoing support.
Preliminary Procedures
The first step in applying for a Critical Reference Resources Grant is to submit a preliminary letter of inquiry to determine eligibility. The letter (maximum two pages) should include the following:
- a brief description of the nature and scope of the project, its history, and its importance to the field;
- a brief description of the qualifications of the personnel who will be involved in the project;
- an estimate of the amount of financial support to be requested from the Getty Foundation; and
- a brief explanation on the nonprofit, charitable, or tax-exempt status of the organization.
If the project is eligible for consideration, the organization will be asked to submit a formal application and will be sent the necessary application instructions.
