Funding is available to support full scholarly research and documentation of one or more distinct groups of objects in a museum's permanent collection by experienced scholars.
Requests for funds to hire an experienced visiting scholar, or to create a substitute position that would enable curatorial staff members to undertake the cataloguing research, are eligible for support.
Additional expenses directly related to the project may be eligible, including the costs of technical examinations of the works.
These grants do not support print publication costs, electronic collection catalogues, special exhibition catalogues, registrars' inventories, checklists, or summary catalogues.
Eligibility
Museums and other nonprofit organizations that own and house art collections and are open to the public on a regular basis are eligible to apply.
Preliminary Procedures
The first step in applying for a Cataloguing of Museum Collections Grant is to submit a preliminary letter of inquiry to determine eligibility. The letter (maximum two pages) should include the following:
- a short description of the collection and its significance;
- a brief description of the qualifications of the personnel who will be undertaking the cataloguing project;
- a brief description of the kind of information included in each entry;
- an estimate of the amount of financial support to be requested from the Getty Foundation; and
- a brief explanation on the nonprofit, charitable, or tax-exempt status of the institution.
If the project is eligible for consideration, the institution will be asked to submit a formal application and will be sent the necessary application instructions.
