Archival Grants support the basic arrangement and description of important archival collections of art-historical material in order to make them more accessible to scholars. Projects are expected to result in the creation of an online finding aid.
These grants do not support digitization of already catalogued archival materials, nor do they support archival research or transcription projects.
Eligibility
Nonprofit institutions that own significant archival collections (including both documentary and photographic archives) relevant to the study of art history are eligible to apply for support. The collections must be open for use by interested scholars.
A typical use for such a grant would be to hire consultant archivists or to create a substitute position that would enable staff members to undertake the project.
Requests for support to preserve archival collections are not eligible; however, certain preservation costs may be considered as a part of a larger arrangement and description project.
Preliminary Procedures
The first step in applying for an Archival Grant is to submit a preliminary letter of inquiry to determine eligibility. The letter (maximum two pages) should include the following:
- a short description of the nature and significance of the archival collection;
- a brief description of the work for which funding is requested;
- a brief description on the way in which scholars currently access the archive;
- a brief description of the qualifications of the personnel who will be involved in the project;
- an estimate of the amount of financial support to be requested from the Getty Foundation; and
- a brief explanation of the nonprofit, charitable, or tax-exempt status of the organization that owns the archive.
If the project is eligible for consideration, the institution will be asked to submit a formal application and will be sent the necessary application instructions.
