Museum Interpretation Grants

These grants support innovative interpretive projects that will increase public appreciation and understanding of artworks in a museum's permanent collection.

Projects should be designed to encourage or complement museum visitors' firsthand experiences with the objects in the collection, and should include the development of educational materials for long-term future use.

Eligibility
Museums with permanent collections of art objects of national or international significance may apply for funding for projects that will provide educational benefits to a diverse range of adult visitors.

Projects should involve the active participation of various members of the museum staff, including curators, educators, and designers, and should reflect an institution-wide commitment to expanding the educational role of the museum.

Funding may be requested to support the planning or implementation of interpretive projects. Eligible project expenses include the following:

  • costs for activities such as preparing interpretive materials;
  • undertaking audience research and evaluation studies;
  • hiring outside consultants; and
  • other expenses that are directly related to the project.

Preliminary Procedures
The first step in applying for a Museum Interpretation Grant is to submit a preliminary letter of inquiry to determine eligibility. The letter (maximum two pages) should include the following:

  1. a brief description of the permanent collection(s) involved in the proposed interpretive project;
  2. a description of the project and of the educational tools or materials to be developed;
  3. a brief description of the qualifications of the personnel who will be involved in the project;
  4. an estimate of the amount of financial support to be requested from the Getty Foundation; and
  5. a brief explanation on the nonprofit, charitable, or tax-exempt status of the organization.

If the project is eligible for consideration, the museum will be asked to submit a formal application and will be sent the necessary application instructions.
