Getty Graduate Internships are offered by the four programs of the Getty Trust: the Museum, Research Institute, Conservation Institute, and Foundation.
Please review the descriptions of graduate internships listed below, then complete the Internship Selection form. Prioritize your choices by writing "1" for your first choice and "2" for your second choice.
The J. Paul Getty Museum collects and exhibits Greek and Roman antiquities, European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts, and European and American photographs and offers a range of special exhibitions and educational programs. Curatorial
Interns participate in the daily activities of one of the Museum's six curatorial departments: Antiquities (at the Villa), Drawings, Manuscripts, Paintings, Photography, and Sculpture and Decorative Arts. Projects may include assisting with the preparation of exhibitions and publications, research and writing on existing holdings and prospective acquisitions, cataloging objects, and other routine curatorial tasks.
Collections Information and Access
The intern becomes acquainted with the management, production, and dissemination of documentation on the Museum's collection. Projects may include new media initiatives, digital media production, information management and the application of standards based practices, information systems and technology, and digital asset management and preservation.
Conservation (12 months)
Conservation internships are offered in the Museum conservation labs: Antiquities (at the Villa), Painting, Photography, and Sculpture and Decorative Arts. Interns in Museum conservation departments focus on the inspection, care, and treatment of objects in the Museum collections.
Design
The intern in the Museum's Exhibition Design Department applies elements of architectural, interior, graphic, and industrial design to the planning, interpretation, promotion, and installation of Museum exhibitions.
Education
The intern in the Museum's Education Department focuses on one of the many programs serving audiences ranging from students and teachers to families and adults, facilitating a variety of learning experiences centered on works of art in the collections and exhibitions.
Exhibitions and Public Programs
The intern in the Museum's Department of Exhibitions and Public Programs participates in the overall coordination of selected Museum exhibitions, helping to bring together the various departments involved in developing an exhibition, and works on special projects as assigned.
Registration
The intern in the Registrar's Office becomes acquainted with the Museum's acquisition policies, registration procedures, and collections management practices. The registration intern assists with exhibitions, including loan, shipping, courier, installation, and de-installation arrangements.
The Getty Research Institute (GRI) promotes advanced scholarship in the visual arts through an international residential scholars program, a growing 900,000-volume library, major archival collections, exhibitions, publications, lectures, and symposia. go to www.getty.edu/research.
Special Collections/Institutional Archives
The intern in the Department of Special Collections and Visual Resources or Institutional Archives develops skills in cataloguing archival collections, including processing collection records, implementing Encoded Archival Description, managing digital assets, and/or applying functional analysis to archival appraisal.
Collection Development Program
Interns working with the collections curators gain experience in researching, evaluating, and writing about prospective acquisitions, planning exhibitions, and developing publications that are focused on the Research Library's special collections.
Programs Department
The intern in Programming works on research, conceptualization, planning, and implementation of programs of a scholarly and public nature. The Research Institute's interests are wide-ranging and programs may be for workshops, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and publications.
The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) pursues a broad range of activities dedicated to advancing conservation practice and education in order to enhance and encourage the preservation, understanding, and interpretation of the visual arts. For more information, go to www.getty.edu/conservation.
Field Projects (12 months)
The GCI offers internships in the department of Field Projects, where interns participate in the organization and implementation of field campaigns that may include hands-on conservation work, the development of conservation plans, and reference documentation.
Science (12 months)
The GCI offers internships in Science, where interns learn to use instrumentation and perform tests to investigate the processes of material deterioration, to design and evaluate conservation solutions, and to conduct technical examinations of works of art in the Getty collections.
Education (12 months)
The intern in the GCI's Department of Education contributes to needs assessments for conservation education, pedagogical research, and the development of courses, workshops, or meetings for conservation professionals.
The Getty Foundation provides support to institutions and individuals throughout the world, funding a diverse range of projects that promote the understanding and conservation of the visual arts. www.getty.edu/grants.
Philanthropy The intern in the Foundation participates in the administration of grant-making programs in the areas of research, conservation, and education, by performing tasks from fielding inquiries to the awarding of grants and the evaluation of project results.
