Professional Development Grants

Professional Development Grants are intended to allow institutions to provide opportunities for conservation professionals to acquire new skills, particularly conservators from countries where relevant training is not readily available. Grants in this category are awarded only to institutions and not to individuals.

Eligibility
Museums with established conservation departments, regional conservation centers, and other nonprofit institutions may request support to host conservation professionals for specialized training opportunities. Conservators participating in the program must be employed full-time by nonprofit institutions, or must demonstrate a commitment to a career in conservation caring for public collections. Participants must have previous conservation training, and a minimum of three years professional experience as a conservator. Institutions must identify candidates before applying for grant support.

Preliminary Procedures
The first step in applying for a Conservation Professional Development Grant is to submit a preliminary letter of inquiry to determine eligibility. The letter (maximum two pages) should include the following:

  1. a brief description of the institution requesting funding and information on its conservation staff and facilities;
  2. a brief description of the activities for which funding is being requested;
  3. a brief description of the importance of these activities to the individuals and institutions involved;
  4. a brief description of the qualifications of the personnel who will be involved in the project;
  5. an estimate of the amount of financial support to be requested from the Grant Program; and
  6. a brief explanation on the nonprofit, charitable, or tax-exempt status of the organization.

If the project is eligible for grant consideration, the organization will be asked to submit a formal application and will be sent the necessary application forms.

Terms
Training must be full-time, and may range from a period of three to twelve months. Eligible costs include stipends, research materials, travel, and some administrative costs.
