New Initiative for Preserving Canvas Paintings

We are pleased to announce the first round of grants for Conserving Canvas, an international initiative to ensure that critical conservation skills needed to care for paintings on canvas do not disappear. Conserving Canvas grants support a variety of projects that train conservators and disseminate knowledge about diverse treatment approaches, which include lining or relining a canvas, removing a lining and its adhesives, tear mending, reweaving, and mist lining. Inaugural projects include the conservation of Thomas Gainsborough's The Blue Boy (1770) at the Huntington and Anthony van Dyck's Equestrian Portrait of Charles I (1637–8) at the National Gallery, London. Additional grantees include the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Statens Historiska Museer, Stockholm; Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg, Maastricht; University of Glasgow; and Yale University, New Haven.

Welcome Intern Class of 2018

Our 26th annual summer Multicultural Undergraduate Internship program will wind down soon, with over 120 students finishing positions at 68 Los Angeles County cultural institutions, including the Getty. Over the course of ten weeks, interns have gained firsthand experience of what it's like to work in the art world and have had the chance to develop a broad network of peers. Last month, interns attended Arts Summit, a professional-development day at the Getty, which includes behind-the-scenes tours and discussion sessions with cultural and museum leaders. This year's keynote address was given by Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, an interdisciplinary visual artist, writer, and performer whose work includes a recent solo exhibition at the California African American Museum about missing women of African-American descent. Hinkle encouraged interns by saying, "We need you. The art world needs you."

Getty Foundation Receives Pobladores Award

The Getty is honored to have received a Pobladores award from LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in recognition for its role in supporting Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. Our senior program officer Heather MacDonald was welcomed to share the stage with iconic artists and activists—including pioneering collector, arts advocate, and actor Cheech Marin!—who were being celebrated for their commitment to the Chicano art community. The commemorative plaque? A hand-painted tortilla by artist Joe Bravo, which we are now displaying proudly in our offices. For more news and updates about Pacific Standard Time, stay tuned for an upcoming report on the initiative which will be published on our website this fall.
