PLEASE NOTE: the application deadline for Pacific Standard Time: L.A./L.A. research and planning grants has passed. Instructions remain here for reference only.

The Getty Foundation is offering Exhibition Research and Planning Grants for Pacific Standard Time: L.A./L.A., which will encompass exhibitions that explore the artistic connections between Los Angeles and Latin America, the relationships between Latin America and the rest of the world, the history of exchange among Latin American countries, and the Latin American diaspora. Potential new research and exhibition topics could span diverse media, styles, themes, and time periods (see initiative description for L.A./L.A.). These grants are intended to support scholarly research and planning in preparation for exhibitions scheduled for fall 2017. Research and Planning Grants do not provide support for the actual costs of mounting exhibitions, which will be considered at a later date based on the success of the previous phase.

Eligibility

Nonprofit institutions that are planning exhibitions that fall within the scope outlined above are eligible to apply. Support for up to two years is available for teams of scholars, curators, and other experts to conduct research and collaboratively develop exhibition concepts, themes, checklists, and publications. Projects may include collaborations with museums in Latin America or elsewhere. Project teams will be expected to produce significant original research based on archival materials, visits to collections, oral histories, etc. Eligible costs may include salary replacement or fees for team members, travel for research and team meetings, research assistance, graduate student stipends, and some research materials, such as photographs. Grants are generally expected to range from $50,000 to $200,000, depending on the size of the institution, the scope of the project, and the number of researchers involved.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit an initial letter of inquiry (1-2 pages in length) describing the project conception and potential team members to gauge eligibility and competitiveness.

Application Deadline

Applications are due online by midnight, December 16, 2013.
