Background
Aiming to increase diversity in and provide support for Los Angeles-area museums and visual arts organizations, the Multicultural Undergraduate Internship program has funded substantive, full-time summer work opportunities for students at Los Angeles-area museums and visual arts organizations. Since the program's founding in 1993, more than 80 local arts institutions, including the Getty Center and the Getty Villa, have hosted over 2,100 undergraduates, exposing these students to career possibilities in the arts.

What's Next
Based on the results of a major evaluation of the internship program, the Foundation is developing networking and professional development programs for former interns. The 2006 evaluation found that the Foundation's program successfully exposes interns to a breadth of visual arts-related job opportunities, has a positive impact on their academic choices, and leads many into careers at museums and visual arts nonprofits. The evaluation also found that alumni would like more professional development opportunities, and a greater sense of connection to the Getty and to each other. The Foundation sees the new alumni programs as an opportunity to foster a greater sense of community among alumni. The first program, a professional development workshop entitled Leading From Where You Stand, was held in May 2009 in conjunction with the L.A. County Arts Commission.
