Rituals of Death in Antiquity
In anticipation of our popular
Death Salon Getty Villa, we commissioned a series of reflections on death and the afterlife in the ancient world. Curator David Saunders deciphers illustrations on the surface of 2,500-year-old Italian funerary vases; artist Paul Koudounaris shares his astonishing photographs of funeral practices around the world; and museum educator Eric Bruehl reveals why the ancients chose flawed heroes to accompany them into the afterlife.
