Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, 1911–2011

June 26–October 21, 2018 | The Getty Center
This exhibition surveys the rich and varied history of modern fashion photography, exploring the ways in which photographers whose careers have been closely associated with the industry have shaped evolving notions of style and beauty. Icons of Style features more than 160 photographs presented alongside a selection of costumes, illustrations, magazine covers, videos, and advertisements.

Artists and Their Books/Books and Their Artists

June 26–October 28, 2018 | The Getty Center
This highly visual and experiential presentation of some of the most lively and surprising works from the Getty Research Institute's extensive collections focuses on artists' books that can be unpacked, unfolded, unfurled, or disassembled. They are made to be displayed on the wall or deployed as sculptures or installations. The exhibition seeks to provoke new inquiry into the nature of art and to highlight the essential role that books play in contemporary culture.

Off the 405: Peaking Lights Family Band with Onochie Chukwurah

Saturday, June 23, 6:00 p.m. | The Getty Center
Peaking Lights is electronic dance music duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis, whose five albums and many recordings combine elements of dub, reggae, Krautrock, disco, and psychedelic pop. For Off the 405 they are appearing as the expanded Peaking Lights Family Band with a group of fifteen musicians and dancers based in Los Angeles, including drummer Onochie Chukwurah of Fela Kuti's original band. A celebration of diverse of rhythms and sounds, their music is a combination of electronic and African rhythms and psychedelics, dubbed out through Peaking Lights' "echodelic" filter. DJ set by Aquarium Drunkard.

Gyula Gazdag and Cold War Hungarian Cinema

Saturday, June 2, 2018, 4:30 p.m. | The Getty Center
Two seminal films by renowned Hungarian film director Gyula Gazdag, A válogatás (1970) and Bástyasétány hetvennégy (1974), feature Gazdag's sharp observation and subtle satire of the regime that ruled Hungary at the time. Vera Mijojlic, director of the South East European Film Festival, will introduce the films. Following the screenings, Mijojlic will be joined in conversation by award-winning documentary filmmakers Gabor Kalman and Endre Hules.

Wonders of Art and Science: A Day of Discovery

Renowned Iranian singer-songwriter and composer Mohsen Namjoo, and artists Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari, come to the Getty to discuss their collaboration, On the String of the Tear's Bow. This musical and visual odyssey investigates the confluence of cultures along the Silk Road with interpretations of traditional songs by Namjoo and video and photographic installations by Neshat and Azari. Amarna Princess

This reproduction depicts an Egyptian princess, thought to be one of the daughters of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. The original sculpture dates from Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty, when the pharaoh Akhenaten had the first life-like, naturalistic portraits made at the workshop led by the master sculptor, Thutmose. Until that time, only static, idealizing portraiture had existed.

Capturing the Catwalk

Capturing the Catwalk explores the pioneering photography of Michel Arnaud, whose work for Harper's Bazaar and British Vogue spans the 1970s–1990s. Featuring garments and accessories from brands such as Dior, Chanel, and Versace alongside selections from Arnaud's photographic archive, this exhibition highlights runway spectacle in the age of supermodels.
