Explore the history of Cuban architecture

Echoes of the Avant Garde
Cuban Architecture from the 1930s into the 1960s
Thursday, July 21 | 7:00 p.m.

Discover the history of Cuban architecture in a talk by internationally recognized architect, author, and urban planner Julio César Pérez Hernández.

By the 1920s, Havana was a Caribbean metropolis where the artistic avant-garde had an enormous impact on society and in particular, architecture. The prevailing Eclectic style, emblematic of the country's colonial past, soon shifted to Art Deco, following influences from both Europe and the United States, in advance of the embrace of the International Style. The quest for national identity merged with these developments.

This program complements the exhibition A Revolutionary project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now, on view through October 2.
