From Then to Now

By Juan C. Alejo

I chose to take this picture on Olvera Street in Los Angeles. When I was walking through the streets, I saw this picture in the window of an empty building and just thought how cool it was. The picture caught my eye because of how it looks in the window of the old building and how it tells a story of historic Los Angeles. There was no high technology like we have today; people used to take trains and ride horses to move from place to place. You can tell this photo is old because it was taken in black and white, and also because of how the buildings were built and how people were dressed.

If you pay close attention, you can see the buildings of modern-day Los Angeles reflected in the window. Looking at these two images together, we can see that Los Angeles has changed a lot. Transportation has changed. People don't walk around anymore. They take buses or bikes, or drive their own cars. The city moves faster, but Olvera Street is still this little place where a person can go and see history.
