Last week I had them answer 10 questions based on a bio I'd put together on
Michelangelo. This week I've put together a bio on Raphael which includes
an image of "The School of Athens." As we're studying perspective and the
Renaissance, I'll have them explain how Raphael used some of the techniques
we've talked about in class (overlapping, vertical placement, converging
parallel lines, etc.) to create the illusion of depth in this painting.
I've found this is a good way to get them to stop and LOOK at art work, to
gain understanding about artists and art periods, and to (I hope!) begin
using what they're learning in their own artwork.
