final thoughts on writing

In my classroom, writing is a part of the class. Along with creating
art, my students write quite a bit, compared to other art classes. Reason
being my students are not at grade level for reading nor writing. Any
additional exposure (writing across the curriculum) helps them in some way.
When a student is given a particular assignment as a result from a
undesirable behavior, I don't explain to the students that is their
punishment. It is their choice. They choose to either create art or read
about art. What better way to be inspired about art, than to read and look
at pictures about other artists. So it is really not punishment per say and
students are not graded on the extra assignment. It is another approach of
focusing their attention. I suppose I have the students on the other end of
the spectrum where every possible problem a student could have they have.
