I was lucky enough to get an "elk skull" from a hunter. It was cleaned and
bleached and had a beautiful set of antlers. I do a unit based on the
paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe and one of the projects that the fifth grade
does is a pencil drawing of the still life of the elk. They learn how to do
contour and shade using several kinds of pencils. Then they cut out the elk
skull they have drawn and glue it down on a larger sheet of paper they have
designed using earth tone pastels. The designs with the pastels are large
abstract shapes or wide lines of color resembling a desert sunset......they
look quite stunning with the starkness of the white elk skull glued to the
foreground. I then laminate the pictures which keeps the pastels from
smearing and which adds a nice sheen to the drawings.
