Hi,

I did a project with my 6th graders that was on Greek art. After we viewed
slides of Greek art, ( mostly pots) I had them make their own Greek
artifacts. I bought an old set of ceramic dishes at a garage sale and had
the kids paint them after the style of the Greeks. We used tempra as a base
coat. We used a blow dryer inbetween coats. Some of the paint would
slightly crackle adding an antiquated interest. Most of the kids base coated
their pieces black. They drew on the black pieces their Greek designs with
pencil first. I provided xerox copies of some photos of Greek pots for
inspiration. They then painted over their pencil lines with paint pens or
paint brushes in mostly earth tones. I sprayed the pieces with Crystal Clear
or some other sealing finish. They knew that these pieces were for
decorative purposes only. They looked great displayed together. We don't
have a kiln so it was a good alternative. Laraine
