I think it is very important to provide this age group with enough time
using the basic materials for art making so that they have mastered them
enough to make scematic pictures when they get to that stage. I give them
as much time as possible to "play" with paints, big crayons and chalks,
paper, scissors and glue. Also clay. My experience is also that it is
important also to have lesson plans and by that I mean decisive projects
and introduce them to artists and artworks and methods as a motivation even
if the material itself is often enough motivation, the other is good as
well.
