Comments and Observations:
This is not uncommon where visual arts has been taught cafeteria-style.
Also, because in most grade-school "project art", students are not
taught sequentially, and, therefore, become used to doing things one time
only. It does not occur to them that "drawing" is something visual artists
continue to improve on during a lifetime.
I have had entering students inform me that "I draw horses heads -sideways -
only!" or "I only like to draw cars." or, " I have my own style of drawing,"
"Isn't art supposed to be creative." or, " I do my own thing." Ask these
artists if they also have their own style of creating: math, physics, and
You may want to make comparisons, i.e. "Do you learn to play sports
by throwing a ball only once?" Or, "drawing is to art as
penmanship is to writing." Or: "If you don't learn to draw well, your
cannot improve, and everything subsequent, is affected.
Many high school instructors do not concentrate on "drawing" during a four
program because "drawing" takes tremendous concentration, critical
observation, and practice time; to something most high school students are
accustom. Press on.
