I guess I feel a little like Woody, that I wish to respond to the "monsters"
messages because we so continually hear the negative and not so much the
positive. I teach in a high school (grades 9-12) with an enrollment of 2,150.
We are extremely diverse economically, racially, socially, educationally. We
have a very large English as a Second Language group, large educational
exceptions group, etc. Needless to say, the art classes are reflective of that
mix. I came back to this unairconditioned, large class size school by choice
(begging actually) after teaching for a year in an airconditioned, small class
size suburban school. At this big, urban school I am impressed with the
students and their enthusiasm. They tend to work well together, are typically
genuinely interested in the arts, they try hard. My average class size is 35.
It was 22 at the other school. I taught only five classes at the other school,
six here. My total number of students there was 92. It is 178 here. The kids I
have now are are open to kids of diverse backgrounds, etc. I am very lucky.
However, this situation did not come out of nowhere. It did take several years
to establish a reputation for "seriousness" about the arts. Because my class
is elective, now students tend to enroll who really want to be there. I will
also say that the adminstration at this school has always been supportive, but
some of that comes from spending extra time on committees, after school, lunch
explaining the importance of art.
