I recommend starting with drawing. I only taught HS for one year (last
year, in a K-12 setting... this year I'm only K-6, thank goodness) but I
learned so much. Definitely that I should have TAUGHT drawing, rather
than just letting them practice through sketchbook assignments, etc.
Maybe do a lesson or two on gesture drawing, to loosen them up, then do
blind contour & contour. I am doing this with my 4s right now and they
are absolutely loving it. I am anticipating a great year of work from
this group, as they are really practicing SEEING! And that is the main
reason to teach drawing first... to get in the habit of SEEING like an
ARTIST.
