Thinking more about the tragedy of violence, we have a local artist who does
large images of children with guns. Her name is Grace Graupe-Pillard. I
would also look carefully at work of Diego Rivera, Horace Pippen and Romare
Bearden as starters. Oh, yes, didn't Winslow Homer do war coverage? And how
about the Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post covers during wars? I think
one can bring the idea of non-violence being preferable to violence to the
children without allowing the focus to go to those horrible and sad stories
the children know and live in their real world. I might actually tell them
that we are looking at how this subject affected others and that --well, how
far should we go? What do you think?
Wow, I almost forgot Picasso's Guernica, which we cover in third grade.
