To Marian regarding 7th and 8th graders: I teach both grades and I find
that the key to order in the classroom is keeping them busy and
possitively motivated. I give them a packet on the first day. It is
filled with drawing exercises of all sorts. Most of them tie in to the
lessons. They must finish the packet by the end of the term and it is
about one fourth of their grade. They must work on these if they get
done with their assignment early during class. I don't allow them to
work on other class homework or just sit-ever. Of course, designing
lessons which are age appropriate and catches their interest is
important. Also consistant discipline and tough, mean what you say
attitude towards any discipline problems. This age will try you to see
if you mean it, but they really do love an orderly classroom with strict
rules. Hope this helps.
