fairytales

Hi Kathy,

On fairytales : I have an idea. " A modern day fairytale" good for middle
school/high school

Talk to the class about what elements are included in fairytales ( magic,
good/evil etc. )

Discuss fairytale illustration elements ( illuminated letters, spot
illustrations, full page illustrations)

The assignment is to take a traditional fairytale and illustrate it for the
90's.

Examples: Sleeping Beauty wouldn't have pricked her finger on a spinning
wheel but perhaps a staple gun or anything modern.

Cinderella might have given her fairy god mother a Snickers bar which
was then turned into a limo or farrari to take her to the " Club ".

Let them come back to class with thumbnail sketches of their illustrations so
they can present their ideas to the class and the whole class can participate
in a brainstorming session.

The assignment should include : an illuminated letter ( 2" x 2" )
a spot illustration
a full page illustration
These are all from the same fairytale. The finished pieces can be matted in
one mat with 3 windows, one for each illustration.
