This year I started my third grade students on a fun activity using simple
shapes (for our school math standards) and texture. They had to draw a cat
using shapes, then use multicolored crayons to do rubbings over many different
surfaces (I have a box of old kitchen baskets, webbing for needlecraft,
cardboard, sandpaper, etc.) They had to color in the cat using lots of
textures and colors. We ended up calling it the Calico Cat. You could include
the Gingham dog. The kids really liked using the texture on the bottom of
their shoes for backgrounds. I had a collection of cat pictures posted from an
old calendar to help them visualize cats in many poses. The results were a big hit.
